Colophon

Every genuine copy accounted for. Every counterfeit exposed.

An operating system for African publishing houses: distribution, authentication, and the intelligence that lives in between.

iThe case for Colophonmmxxvi
01The problem

Piracy is the tax on every genuine book.

Across African educational publishing, counterfeiting is not a nuisance. It is an existential, multi-billion-dollar drain. For every print run that reaches a classroom, an unknown number of forgeries trail it: same cover, same pages, none of the revenue that funds the next edition.

The only defence the market has offered is a crude, central SMS-PIN scheme: one shared shortcode, no provenance, no intelligence. A publisher cannot see where its genuine copies went, much less where the fakes surfaced.

You cannot defend what you cannot see.

02The idea

Two records the market keeps apart. The product is the join.

Ground truth

Distribution: every print run, order, container, and dispatch. The system of record for where genuine copies legitimately went.

Observed reality

Verification: every scan at the point of sale. Where copies actually surface, and how often.

The gap between them is counterfeit intelligence.

Neither half is credible alone. That is why Colophon is one system, not two features.

03How it works

One unbroken thread, from the press to the proof.

One end-to-end path, made real. Every step is the system of record for the next.

  1. 1

    Mint

Create a print run; high-entropy codes are generated in the background: random, never sequential, never guessable.

  2. 2

    Order

A rep takes an order from a school, bookshop, or distributor, online or offline in the field.

  3. 3

    Dispatch

Containers are assigned and dispatched with a provenance record: these codes, legitimately, to this region.

  4. 4

    Verify

A buyer checks a copy over WhatsApp, SMS, or the web, in seconds, with no app to install.

  5. 5

    Detect

Deterministic rules flag the impossible: unknown codes, duplicates, region mismatches. No guessing, no black box.

  6. 6

    Evidence

Flagged clusters resolve to a regional map and an exportable, court-ready evidence pack.

04Verification

Proof in the buyer's hands, on the channels they already use.

No download. A reader checks a copy three ways:

WhatsApp

Send the code to a branded number; get an instant verdict.

via Termii

SMS

Text it to a shortcode where there is no data signal.

via Africa's Talking

Web scan

Scan the QR or key the code on a verification page.

05Intelligence

Every scan becomes a signal. Every signal, evidence.

Detection is deterministic: rules a court can follow, not a model that hallucinates. Three flags do the work:

unknown_code
A code that was never minted in any run.
duplicate
A single copy verified more than once.
region_mismatch
A copy surfacing where it was never dispatched.

Flags resolve to a region-level picture, genuine scans against counterfeit clusters, so a publisher can see which regions and distributors leak. For any title, run, region, or period, Colophon renders a print-styled evidence pack: the legitimate destinations, the flagged events, exportable to PDF and sent by email.

06Built for

Built for the whole chain.

The publisher's office

Titles, runs, container types, intelligence, and evidence: the admin view of the entire operation.

The field rep

Orders, dispatch, and scans that work offline in a school with no signal, and sync on reconnect.

The reader

A student, teacher, or parent who verifies a copy in seconds. No account, no app.

A book carries its own proof. We just made it legible: from the press, to the shelf, to the child's hands.
